A. Maffei: Equations defining symmetric varieties.
Abstract. Let G be a simple
algebraic group and let H be the subgroup of point fixed by an
involution of G. The affine variety G/H is called a symmetric variety.
In some cases this variety has a natural set of generators and the
relations are known to be quadratic. We describe the resulting
equations in terms of plucker relations of a (possibly infinite
dimensional) grassmannian.
