DEPARTMENT OF
MATHEMATICS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Within the Department,
research covers both pure and applied mathematics. The common aim in all
our research is the delivery of original and meaningful results which
widen knowledge in the different fields of mathematics and the
development of new models, methods and algorithms with all types of
applications. Results obtained here fulfil the standard requirements
laid down by the international scientific community, and in fact much of
the research carried out in our Department is published in prestigious
Italian and international journals. Research interests range from functional and harmonic analysis to the
mathematical theory of control, from non linear analysis to differential
equations, from algebraic and differential geometry to mathematical models
for engineering and biology, to numerical analysis, probability and
statistics.
At an international level, the research carried out in
this Department is in collaboration with other world-famous study groups
in Italy, Europe, the United States and various other countries (for
example the universities of Paris, Grenoble, Barcelona, Madrid,
Paderbom, Gottinga, Aachen, Graz, Warwick, Nottingham, Osaka, Texas
A&M). Funding for research comes from the Politecnico
itself, national and international public institutions and private
industry. Some of the Italian institutions include MIUR, CNR, l'Istituto
Nazionale di Alta Matematica (National institute the high-level
mathematics), l'Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (Italian Space Agency). Among
the international institutions are European Union with projects such as
HCM, TMR, RTN and Brite-Euram as well as research projects for Nato.
Private funding comes from companies such as la Compagnia di San Paolo
(San Paolo Bank), l'IRCC (Cancer Research Institute) in Candiolo the
FIAT Research Centre and Novartis of Basel).
